Grass Autotests are a great cheap way into motor sport. You do not require a competition licence and the car can even be an MOT failure as long as its not dangerous to yourself or others. Basically as long as nothing is hanging off and the brakes work you're on your way! A helmet is not necessary and it is not even necessary to wear a seat belt. This may all sound a bit dangerous but the circuits are tight and twisty between closely spaced cones and most of us are running in first or second gear throughout. There are 9 timed runs and the entry fee for the day is £22.00 for adults and £15 for juniors. Cars can be double entered so you can save costs further by sharing a car.

You can start from as young as 14 in the production class as long as you have an adult with a driving licence in the passenger seat. The car needs to be less than 1400cc..

Grasstests are held in a field near Drumclog and also at Pinwherry near Girvan. Drumclog is 8 miles north east of Murkirk and 5 miles west of Strathaven. It’s an ideal venue for these events as it’s around 10-12 acres of flat, sandy, well drained ground which doesn’t cut up.

ADULT CHAMPIONSHIP
CLASS 1:- Front and Rear wheel drive – up to 1400cc
CLASS 2:- Front and Rear wheel drive – over 1400cc
CLASS 3:- Kit cars and Specials front and rear wheel drive
CLASS 4:- 16/17 yr olds Front wheel drive – up to 1400cc

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

CLASS 1:- Production car class- Juniors 14yrs-16yrs up to 1400cc

Vehicles need not be registered or taxed but they must comply with basic MSA technical regulations i.e. battery and seat must be firmly fixed in position, no bits should be falling off or loose, there should be no fluid leaks and 2 return springs are required for the throttle return. Cars are scrutineered before each event.

There will be awards given out on the day to all class winners and the results count towards the club championship, with a trophy for each class winner at the year-end and an overall champion.

Grass Tracking Weekend 2007

Once a year we hold a full weekend's grass test at Drumclog. There's plenty of room for camping and we always have barbecue and disco into the small hours......
